I have 2 websites running private instances of Mastadon (Twitter alternative social media) on 2 separate volumes of my Linodes account.
But it seems that Linodes considers webhosting as a nuisance to deal with and is devoted to enabling “machines” in a virtual environment. Any questions to Linodes support about how to better implement a webserver application on a virtual volume starts with an explanation that such questions are outside their Support realm.
Linodes.com, which I didn’t understand when I assigned these two websites months ago, by default installs “one-click images” ONE application to a volume.
When you’ve provisioned a volume, say for an Ubuntu server, then the volume is installed and Ubuntu server is installed with the dependencies included on that particular image. But the only way to get other applications on to the same volume for the same website is to use a third party app that they allow like Cloudron – but this adds more layers of files and permissions that must now work through a Cloudron account first.
The big problem for me is that after I chose to install Ubuntu 20 as my server environment no other app services that might be required by different apps, say a postgre database instead of a MariaDB (example), can be installed on the same Linodes volume I want to run my website. by merely choosing a Snap or other flavor of installation script from the Linodes Marketplace.
With every website I must have a thorough Administrator webhosting control panel to control mail, databases & backups, files management, analyze dependencies and services, monitoring & start/stop controls, environmental views, etc.
Currently Linodes.com dictates that for just adding Virtualmin https://www.virtualmin.com/ a new Volume with a different auto assigned IP address is the requirement.
So having Virtualmin running in a new volume with a different IP address doesn’t get it done.
The workarounds I’ve read about are complicated and Linodes.com does NOT ENABLE some workarounds on the Frankfurt, Germany Linodes.com server.
Do you seasoned pros have suggestions for a more flexible WEBHOSTING company for Node apps ?
Where a package includes snaps or install scripts or DEBS on to the same volume as the server environment.
