Possible FTP problem

I was having trouble connecting to a remote server using FTP. I tried all the usual things (IP address, checking remote folder etc), but nothing worked. I double-checked username/password with FileZilla. It should have been straightforward because I have a number of other projects using the same server. Whatever I did, a message about an ‘unknown command’* appeared.

Eventually, I changed the FTP password, and that fixed it. The previous password contained various symbols, including £, $ and _. I wonder if this was the issue, in which case it might be a bug.
